MY CHOREOGRAPHY.
My art references the oppositional gaze and the “rebellious act of looking back,” as referenced by bell hooks. As a choreographer, I value empowering students to resist spectatorship. Their choices inform how I respond to the music and environment. Through narrative and various choreographic techniques, I mirror the Africanist Aesthetics of ephebism, “coolness,” polyrhythm, polycentrism, curvilinearity, dimensionality, epic memory, holism, and repetition. I use Kariuamu Welsh’s seven senses as a way of juxtaposing Western notions of choregraphing. I encourage vulnerability and self-awareness from all parties involved. Incorporating gaze is a way to honor the intersectional identities of my performers as well as honor their humanity.
